John R. (Jack) "Red" Kohl

John R. (Jack) "Red" Kohl, 94 of Sewickley, formerly of McKeesport, died Wednesday October 29, 2014 at the Masonic Village at Sewickley where he had been a resident for the last 3 years. He was born August 19, 1920, in Lincoln Place and was the son of the late Albert Killian and Verda Harrison Kohl. He was the husband of 50 years of the late Lorraine Slack Kohl. Jack grew up in Dravosburg and lived for over 50 years on Grandview Avenue in McKeesport. He was the beloved father of Jon (Patricia) Kohl of Hillsdale, NJ, Keith (Elizabeth) Kohl of Etters, Karen Kohl (Donald) Helmstadter of Plymouth, MI and Kathleen Kohl (Edward) Dirling of Ormond Beach, FL, beloved grandfather of Kimberly Kohl (Bill) Castonguay, Laura Kohl (Scott) St. John, Shelli Kohl (Bill) Napolitano, Denise Kohl (Jeff) Kohan, Michael (Sara) Helmstadter, Scott (Corey-Anne) Helmstadter, James (Jenifer) Craig, Kara Craig (Matt) Peterson, Ashlee Craig (Derrick) Honaker, Keith Ryan (Kellie) Kohl, Lindsey Kohl (Stephen) Campbell and Michael Murdock. He is also survived by16 great-grandchildren, his sister Faye Kohl (James) Schuch of Albany, NY and daughter in law Carol Falk Kohl of South Windsor, CT. He was preceded in death by his son Ronald Kohl and brothers Harold (Shirley) Kohl, James, Kenneth and Glenn Kohl. Jack's family recently celebrated his 94th birthday with a picnic with all 53 immediate family members in attendance. He was retired from US Steel Irvin Works where he worked for over 40 years. He proudly served in the US Army in World War II was stationed in the Philippines and then was a part of the occupational troops in Tokyo, Japan after the war ended. He loved wearing his World War II hat and it always made him smile when people would come up to him to thank him for his service. He was a member of Beulah Park Methodist Church. Masonic Lodge #765 East McKeesport and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon #705. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol # 601 out of the Allegheny County Airport and was a Major in their Search and Rescue team. Closest to his heart were his family, his model trains, airplanes and the Steelers. Friends are welcome Saturday November 1 from 10 AM to 11 AM at the Gilbert Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 6028 Smithfield Street, Boston, Elizabeth Twp. Funeral service including a Masonic service and Military Honors will be held in the funeral home chapel on Saturday at 11 AM. Private inurnment will be in the McKeesport Versailles Cemetery Mausoleum.
