Betty Lucille Sholtis, 91, of Greenock, died Sunday, September 28, 2014. She was born on a farm near the village of Sarona, WI., the third daughter of the late Vivian L. "Hap" and Mabel Joseph Sorenson. Betty attended Spooner High School and the Rice Normal School. She taught all eight grades at a rural elementary school. "When Uncle Sam called her" she enlisted and became a cook in the US Marine Corps. After Basic Training and Cooks and Bakers School at Camp LeJeune, NC., she was transferred to an air base near Santa Barbara, CA. On leaving for California, Betty wrote in her journal "Carolina moon keep on shining, shining on the one who waits for me". He was Marine Sergeant James Sholtis. Jim and Betty married September 2, 1944. After the war, they returned to Clairton, where Jim worked for US Steel for 43 years. Betty attended California University for two years and spent 7 years teaching in Elizabeth Forward until her vision failed. She was hired by the Pittsburgh Blind Association within days and worked there for six years until federal funding was cut. She was a member of the Greenock United Methodist Church and the Elizabeth Twp. Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husband James B. Sholtis who died May 30, 1994, daughter, Kathleen Trbovic who died 1996 and a sister, Marge Celentano. She is survived by her children, Judith A. House of Greenock, James M. Sholtis of Mount Vernon, Jon V. Sholtis of Versailles, Robin M. Megala of Pfafftown, NC, and Jack J. Sholtis of Ketchum, ID, sisters, Naomi Beardsley and Verjean Schullo of Shell Lake, WI, 11 precious grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Friends are welcome Thursday, October 2 from 2-6 PM at the Gilbert Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 6028 Smithfield Street, Boston, Elizabeth Township. Service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, October 2, at 6:00 PM with the Rev. Ed Pope, officiating.
