Thomas Edward Race, Jr., 81, of Elizabeth Twp., died Friday, March 15, 2013 in Southwestern Veterans Center, Pittsburgh. He was born December 12, 1931 "on Tin Plate Hill" Highland Grove, son of the late Thomas E. Race, Sr. and the late Blanche Miller Race. He was a member of St. Mary's Romanian Byzantine Church, Christy Park and attended the former St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles. He was also a member of the White Oak American Legion Post 701. Tom served in the US Army during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, Korean War Service Medal, Korea Presidential Unit Citation, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was injured as a result of hostile Actions and lost an eye. Tom worked for the McKeesport Post Office and retired from the Boston Post Office after 35 years of service and later South Park Golf Course after 10 years of service there. He was an avid golfer. Beloved husband of 60 years of Marie Virginia Killian Race, beloved and devoted father of Teri and her husband Gary Quiggle of Liberty Borough, Renee and her husband, Larry Landman of Grindstone, beloved and devoted grandfather of Krista and Kaitlin Quiggle of Liberty Borough and Zachary and Nicholas Landman of Grindstone, and brother of William Race of Elizabeth Twp. In addition, he is also survived by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Race and sister, Nancy and her husband Robert Burgman. Friends are welcome Monday March 18 from 6-8 PM and Tuesday March 19 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Gilbert Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 6028 Smithfield Street, Boston, Elizabeth Township. Divine Liturgy and Funeral Service will be held at the St. Mary's Romanian Church, on Wednesday March 20, at 9:00 AM with Father Paul Voida, officiating. (Everyone please meet at the Church). Interment with Military Honors will follow at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville.
